The Mystery of the Damaged Doormat

I recently noticed some damage to our doormat. I was quite sure that the rapid wear and tear was not caused by the wiping of human feet.

What could cause this damage? I thought perhaps birds were using the fibers for nesting material or maybe a squirrel?

I set up my automatic trailcam to catch the culprit. See the results of the investigation after the jump.

It turns out the culprit was a rabbit. If you look carefully, a snail can also be seen in the nighttime shots.

Heidi, very observant! The mat actually has a black rubber bottom.

Jon, yes, I believe gnawing action is occurring.
