Happy New Year!

It’s January 3, 2012 and yes, the outdoor Christmas decorations are still up. There are twelve days of Christmas, right?

High Impact Snow Squalls

Today lake effect snow streamers originating from Lake Erie brought snow all the way into Virginia. Here at Old Dominion Wildlife Headquarters, we measured 1.25″ to ring in the first snowfall of 2012.

Since I was telecommuting during the Commutageddon snow storm last year, today was my mini-Commutageddon. While the accumulations were not especially high, the day proved that it does not take a lot of snow to cause major problems on the highways. I drove through near white-out conditions on I-81 this morning and again through another significant snowfall this evening near Winchester. There were numerous off-the-road vehicles along I-81, including one vehicle upside-down and another on its side. Farther south, a 30+ car pileup occurred near Harrisonburg.
