From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:
…The storm cluster moved from the Charlottesville area to Hampton Roads, but the heaviest winds hit parts of Richmond and the counties of Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, Charles City and James City, said Wayne Albright, a weather service meteorologist.
Most of the hard-hit areas were the victims of straight winds, not tornadoes. “Whether it’s a tornado or not is not really significant when it’s 80 mph winds,” Albright said. “It’s still dangerous, regardless.”
He added, “Straight-line wind events are usually more widespread” than tornadoes. “These kinds of things are as dangerous (as tornadoes) or more because it’s covering a bigger area.”
