Questions Abound In Cause of Point 2 Fire

July 8, 2012

The Mid-July 2012 Warren County Report has an interesting/entertaining article on questions surrounding the cause of the Point 2 fire burning on Massanutten Mountain.

County residents who witnessed a bright object fall from the June 24th night sky in the area where a fire in the George Washington National Forest broke out the following day wonder if the two events are related…

“When it came down there was an orange glow right from the area the fire was first reported in the next day.”

…While near the top of Fort Valley Road they encountered a moderate-sized flatbed truck with something about the size of a go-kart covered by a tarp going the other way. The flatbed, about dump truck length and width Codey estimated, was flanked front and back by fire trucks…

…What really attracted their attention was a message picked up on a scanner application on a cell phone inquiring about “an estimated ETA at Mt. Weather”

The Shenandoah Valley Fire Facebook page reports this fire, along with the others, are now close to being contained. This site also identifies lightning as the cause of the Point 2 fire.
