Sky Meadows Hike
The weather has been pretty nice this summer and last Sunday was no exception. We went for a picnic at Sky Meadows Park picnic area and then went on a short hike to experience the beauty of Sky Meadows State Park in Fauquier County.
We made a short loop going up the North Ridge Trail returning on the Piedmont Overlook Trail. This short loop is a good distance for young kids and also features nice overlooks in the meadows for which the park is famous.
Coming into the park off Rte 17 in Crooked Run Valley, hikes start uphill but as a result you will have an easy downhill return to your car. Our three year old needed a piggyback ride at times on the ascent, but enjoyed hiking/running the descent all by herself.
This route starts from just under 900 ft and climbs to nearly 1300 ft. The total distance is 1.3 miles.
Here are a few pictures from our hike:
We saw a variety of wildflowers including:
From Route 66, take Rte 17 north at exit 23 (Delaplane).
The main Sky Meadows Park grounds are on your left. The picnic grounds are off to your right once entering the park. Most hiking trails, including the Piedmont Overlook Trail, start from the Historic Area farther up the main park road.
