Eastern Newt

Eastern newts may close their eyes when stressed.  We spotted this one along the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

My wife also took a picture of the slimy salamander we found underneath a rock.

Last weekend, I found a black and white salamander underneath a rock when planting a cedar tree that my dad gave me.  I left the rock they way I found it.

I identified the salamander as a slimy salamander using a field guide entitled Amphibians & Reptiles of the Carolinas & Virginia.  I highly recommend this field guide.

American Toad

I spotted this toad while working in the yard recently.
