Dead Southern Flying Squirrel

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Expecting to trap a mouse, I was surprised to find a dead southern flying squirrel in a glue trap in my garage. A total of two squirrels were discovered. Their point of entry was chewing through the soffit.

The good news is that the squirrels are eliminated and the soffit is repaired. If you’re looking for service in the Front Royal, VA area, I highly recommend Dolly’s Home Improvement. In addition to repairing the soffit, they also fixed our gutter that was damaged by an ice dam. I’m glad to have the gutter functional ahead of heavy rains expected over the next couple of days.

Deer Track in the Snow

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Deer tracks are easily identifiable tracks in Virginia due to the hoof print. Wild boar (introduced to North America by European immigrants) tracks are similar but are unlikely to find most places. The known wild boar range includes some counties in West Virginia. There are also reports of wild boar on Virginia beaches.

The snow covered deer returned later in the afternoon and I took a couple additional photos.

1/30/2010 Snow Totals

Here at Old Dominion Wildlife HQ, we picked up 5″ of snow. Other areas of Virginia picked up more as Capital Climate reports:

Blacksburg VA 11.3″
Richmond VA 8.0″s
Norfolk VA 6.1″
Wallops Island VA 10.0″

My friend MaryBeth in Richmond measured over 11″ so the RIC airport reading appears to understate the accumulation in the Richmond area.

More Snow Coming

CapitalWeatherGang details two more chances of snow, tonight and again Friday/Saturday.

Rodent Tracks

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I took this picture on January 10th… I didn’t examine the tracks too closely, but think they are probably either mouse or vole tracks in the snow.

Now the snow cover is almost gone, but there is another weather event expected Thursday into Friday. Stay tuned for updates.
