In the woods behind our house, I noticed some maidenhair ferns growing.

Hiking at Bull Run Mountain Conservancy
When my wife and I worked at our previously held jobs near Dulles Airport, we sometimes stopped at The Bull Run Mountain Conservancy on our way home. There are numerous short loops that can be made, including a trip up the Ridge Trail and down the Ridge Loop Trail. There are sidetrails off of the Ridge Trail leading to nice views west, especially in the winter. The Ridge Trail actually extends past the Bull Run Mountains Conservancy property to spectacular views at High Point; however, on our most recent trip, the trail was blocked off and posted with Private Property-No Trespassing signs. In addition to seeing turtles, we also enjoyed trails lined with ferns.
Trail Running at the Bull Run Mountain Natural Area
Except for the steep Ridge and Ridge Loop Trails, most of the trails are quite run-able in the conservancy. Trail running in the woods on natural surfaces is a nice alternative to pounding the pavement in the sun. Some of our favorite routes explored various trails before returning to Beverley Mill Drive via the East End Trail.
History at BRMC
The preserve contains interesting ruins of buildings and remnants of mines. Additionally, you can see Chapman’s Mill (aka Beverley’s Mill), which is actually the tallest stone building in the United States. Unfortunately vandals burned the mill several years ago; the mill is currently undergoing a partial restoration.
Norfolk Southern B-Line
Trails cross the Norfolk Southern Railway tracks in the Preserve. Railfans may enjoy watching trains in addition to enjoying the trails. Use caution when crossing the railroad tracks.

You can support the area by donating to BRMC and Chapman’s Mill.
