Green and gold is another option for a native ground cover with pretty yellow spring flowers.

This photo of three common mullein wildflower plants was taken along the Winchester Green Circle Trail.

These tall yellow flowers are common in sunny areas. They remind me a bit of the cardinal flower, in that they would be more spectacular if all the blossoms bloomed simultaneously.

Near the Tom Sealock Spring along the Appalachian Trail, daffodils planted long ago continue to come up year after year. They were apparently planted along a walkway to a home which is now gone.
